Formed in 1961, the name Mets was chosen over several other suggestions because it was short, easy to remember, and reminiscent of an earlier New York baseball team called the Metropolitans. The Mets joined the National League as an expansion team in 1962, bringing a second baseball team to New York after the Dodgers and Giants had left for California. The team's colors are representative of this replacement, taking the Dodgers’ blue and the Giant’s orange.
